Ulrich Becher

Writer in exile
This special exhibition devoted to Ulrich Becher in exile takes the visitor through the various stages of Becher’s exile, with particular attention to the opportunities for writers in exile, the importance of networks when on the run and in exile, and Becher’s remarkable friendship with George Grosz.

The exhibition also takes account of the story of how Ulrich Becher’s estate was passed on: part of it has been located at the German National Library’s German Exile Archive 1933–1945 since 1985, another part in the Swiss National Library’s Swiss Literary Archives since 1993. One can gain a fully rounded impression of Ulrich Bender only by looking at both partial estates at the same time.

The exhibition is therefore the result of a cooperative project pursued by the German National Library’s German Exile Archive 1933–1945 and the Swiss National Library’s Swiss Literary Archives during the winter of 2020/2021.
