The letter refers to the paper Max Beckmann als Maler [Max Beckmann the Painter], which Franz Roh published in Verlag Kurt Desch, Munich, in 1947: four pages of text accompanied by seven colour reproductions of Beckmann's works.
The art historian, art critic and photographer Dr Franz Roh (1890 – 1965) was banned from working under the Nazis; after the War he worked in newspaper and radio in Munich and was an instructor at the university. His publications included Nach-Expressionismus. Magischer Realismus [Magic Realism: Post-Expressionism](1925), Der verkannte Künstler [The Unrecognised Artist] (1948), Geschichte der deutschen Kunst von 1900 bis zur Gegenwart [The History of German Art from 1900 to the Present](1958), Entartete Kunst [Degenerate Art] (1962).
