Max Beckmann to Günther Franke

Handwritten postcard, Amsterdam, 12 February 1941

The bar Het Kaperschip in Amsterdam was located diagonally across from Max Beckmann' s studio and flat at Rokin 85; the painter evidently celebrated his 57th birthday and the one-year anniversary of the bar here. Beckmann was a frequent guest at Kaperschip, as many journal entries demonstrate. As the bar was somewhat below street level, the painter often went there during air raids as well. In spite of rationing, at Kaperschip it was possible even during the War to get champagne and other drinks which were otherwise extremely scarce. “Evening at Kaperschiff, bottle of champagne” (journal, 12/02/1941)

Other cafés and bars visited by Beckmann during his exile in Amsterdam included the Don Juan Bar, Caramella Bar, Madrid Bar, Café Saur and the hotel bars at the Krasnapolsky and Savoy.
