In 1953, Thomas Mann had agreed to let his novel Königliche Hoheit [His Royal Highness] be filmed on condition that his daughter Erika was in complete control. From then on, she influenced the scripts and casting plans, and was usually also present during the filming. Erika Mann herself played smaller roles (such as head nurse Amalie in Königliche Hoheit or the governess in Felix Krull).
