Thomas Mann announced the birth of his first child to his brother Heinrich on 11 November 1905:
“Well, it’s a girl; a disappointment for me, I must admit, as I had so wished for a son and still do. Why? It’s hard to say. I find a son more full of poetry, more a continuation and new beginning of myself under new circumstances. [...] And perhaps the daughter will offer me a closer relationship to the ‘other’ sex, of which I still, although I am now a husband, actually know nothing.”
