Johannes Urzidil: Letter to Felix Weltsch, (1945)

Who would not long to wander again though the Old City of Prague and cross  over the Karlsbrücke....

Letter from Johannes Urzidil to Felix Weltsch, 1945

Johannes Urzidil and Felix Weltsch knew each other from the days of the "Prague Circle,“ long before the German invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939. Urzidil, who was active as an author, publisher, and a translator, was able to flee a few months earlier than Weltsch to the USA, via Great Britain. He lived near New York City until his death in 1970. Urzidil's correspondence with Weltsch, who had settled in Jerusalem, was interrupted during the war. This is one of the first letters Urzidil sent to Weltsch immediately after the end of the war. It expresses his early post-war thoughts and reflections  on settling in the USA and the longing for the lost home he left in Prague.
