Photograph of Heinz and Ricarda Schwerin (1935)
After fleeing Germany, the photographer Ricarda Meltzer and the interior designer Heinz Schwerin lived in Prague. From there they moved on further to Hungary, where they stayed for some time with friends in Pécs who they knew from their time studying at the Bauhaus. Ernst Mittag and his wife, the photographer Etel Fodor-Mittag took in the two refugees in 1935. Heinz and Ricarda Schwerin were married there, with their friends the Fodor-Mittags as witnesses.
A series of photographs showing the friends playing music in the garden were taken during this period of stay. Sometimes Ricarda Schwerin photographed her friends with her husband Heinz, while Edel Fodor-Mittag was the photographer at others times. These carefree pictures show the former fellow students from Bauhaus shortly before the Schwerins left for their final place of exile. Not long after these photographs were taken, Ricarda and Heinz Schwerin went to Switzerland and, from there, emigrated to Palestine.
