Eric Schaal: Portrait photograph by Arnold Schönberg (1940)
Eric Schaal's photographic portraits of Arnold Schoenberg were likely taken in December of 1940. The composer was in New York for the world premiere of his Chamber Symphony No. 2, Op 38, which was performed for the first time on December 15 under the direction of Fritz Stiedry.
A collector of autographs, Schaal had asked Arnold Schoenberg to sign one of the photos for him as he had from the many other artists he photographed. The composer wrote: "To Mr Eric Schaal, for not only making this picture, but also promising to send me copies. I hope this promise will be as good as this picture. Arnold Schönberg January 1941“.
