Letter from Joseph Roth to Moshe Yaakov Ben Gavriel, 1933
Already months before the National Socialists‘ rise to power, the author Joseph Roth predicted the fate of those who would oppose the new regime. As a result, he left Germany in early 1933. In exile, as an author and a publisher, Roth became a vocal protestor against the political situation in Germany.
The letter presented below to a colleague author Moshe Yaakov Ben Gavriel, who had lived in Jerusalem since 1927, demonstrates Roth‘s awareness of his limited ability to help those seeking publication opportunities. He nevertheless did not refuse to help, and indicated the new publication options for Jewish and anti-fachist works in the Netherlands. In this specific case he recommends the Querido-Verlag and the notable exile newspaper Die Sammlung.
