Hans Purrmann: Interior with Two Women, probably completed in 1933

Hans Purrmanns works show the influence of many different artistic movements. Paul Cézanne, and the Expressionists and Fauvists provided artistic inspiration, yet elements of abstract art and Cubism are also discernible. However, until Purrmann’s first period in exile in 1935, none of them made as deep an impression as Henri Matisse, whose influence is particularly evident in works such as Interieur mit zwei Frauen (Interior with Two Women, c. 1933).

The work captures the eye with an interplay of light, colour and planarity and a view that looks out onto a sunlit southern landscape with an azure blue sky; the artist’s insistence on ornamental decoration is particularly striking. The conspicuous formal influence of Matisse and his friendship with the French artist were the main reasons for Purrmann’s early vilification by the Nazis.
