Invitation to the opening of an exhibition by László Moholy-Nagy (1934)

On 24 November 1934, an exhibition took place at the Stedelijk-Museum in Amsterdam showing works by László Moholy-Nagy, with the card above used as an invitation. Paintings, photograms, photomontages and stage set designs were presented at the exhibition. There was also a fringe programme as part of the 14-day exhibition which included a lecture using light works titled “From Panel Paintings to Light Architecture” by László Moholy-Nagy. The exhibition was organised by the Dutch Society for Art and Handicrafts.

In January 1934, László Moholy-Nagy went by train to Amsterdam and was received there by his friends Paul Citroen and Gerrit Rietveld. His partner Sybille was supposed to follow him with their new-born daughter Hattula. He worked in Utrecht as a designer for a satin manufacturer and as a typographic consultant for a print shop, but was unhappy with the not particularly progressive working conditions. And in his private life he felt lonely despite knowing people there.

Moholy-Nagy had not exhibited since 1926 and, in 1934, he was given several opportunities to present his works in shows, like the small solo exhibition organised by the Abstraction-Création group. In late autumn of the same year he had his first larger solo exhibition in Amsterdam. And he was also involved in the Netherlands in exhibitions about film-making and in film showings. In November he showed four of his films in The Hague and gave a lecture about film experiments.
