Richard A. Bermann: Letter to Friends in Prague

I hope that I will soon be holding your books as well, in order to be able to undertake more.

Letter by Richard A. Bermann to friends in Prague, 27.5.1938

The author Richard A. Bermann wrote this letter soon after his successful escape from Austria via Czechoslovakia. He had previously tried twice to escape the annexed Austria to no avail, but the third time he was able to board a plane to Strasbourg, France, and from there continue to Paris. There he contacted his influential benefactor, Hubertus Prince of Löwenstein, with whom he had worked for the American Guild for German Cultural Freedom. Bermann offered the resources of his benefactor to the unnamed letter recipient, although he urgently needed the aid for himself. Bermann only stayed a short while in France before he left for his final exile residence in the United States.
