This black and white drawing shows Joseph Roth with a glass and a cigarette in his right hand, his left hand resting on a walking stick. He is wearing a bow-tie and his mouth is obscured by a substantial moustache. His body, not drawn in, is merely suggested by the positioning of hands and head. The top right hand of the drawing has text in Joseph Roth’s hand: “Nietzsche had it, Rainer Maria Rilke had it, I am the last heir of this moustache. J. R.” The drawing is also signed in the artist’s own hand, using the abbreviation Bil 39.
