It preserves more than 1,400 premature legacies and estates of writers, scientists and academics and is therefore the most extensive collection of sources for literary and intellectual history since the Enlightenment. The library contains more than 1,000,000 volumes, among them many poets’ and scholars’ libraries, and is among the most important specialised libraries for modern German literature and literary studies from the Enlightenment up to the present time. Its two museums, the Schiller National Museum and the Museum of Modern Literature provide access to the archive for a wide audience in their permanent and changing exhibitions. Exile literature forms one of the main focuses of collecting, researching and promoting activities, and is compiled visibly in the “Helen and Kurt Wolff Archive”. Among others, the estates and partial estates of Alfred Doeblin, Hilde Domin, Yvan and Claire Goll, Peter Huchel, Mascha Kaléko, Siegfried Kracauer, Konrad Merz, Else Lasker-Schueler, Heinrich Mann, Joseph Roth, Kurt Pinthus and Carl Zuckmayer as well as the archives of important exile publishers (including S. Fischer) belong to this worldwide most important collection of original materials in the area of exile literature research.
